A visit to the dentist fro dental care services can bring on severe anxiety for some patients. In these cases, at Huebner Smiles Dentistry and Orthodontics, we offer a range of sedation options to help you feel relaxed and calm. IV sedation is one of the major sedations offered in our office. Before administering this medication, we will need a complete medical history from you, including all medications and supplements you are taking. You will also need to complete a comprehensive dental exam. You will be given instructions on how to prepare for your IV sedation prior to your appointment.
Patients receiving IV sedation are always closely monitored during the procedure. After your dental procedure is concluded you will spend some time in recovery and not be released from the office until we are sure it is safe for you to leave. Please be sure to have someone available to drive you home.
Oral Conscious Sedation
With this type of sedation, the patient is awake but very relaxed. You may feel drowsy and some people may even fall asleep. This sedation allows for the dental procedure to be done with minimal discomfort to the patient. It is given in a pill form and taken about an hour before the actual dental procedure begins. The effects are temporary and you will wake up feeling refreshed.
Also known as laughing gas, this method of sedation is often used for children. It relaxes the patient and produces a feeling of euphoria. Some patients relax to the point of sleeping. After the procedure is completed, your system is flushed with oxygen and you come out of it feeling normal and awake.
Before any sedation is administered to our patients we follow a protocol of checking their medical health, medicines and supplements they are taking, whether or not they use alcohol or cigarettes and to what degree. Completing a health history is important for your safety and wellbeing when undergoing sedation. Your dentist will discuss with you in detail the type of sedation that is recommended and what you can expect before, during, and after the procedure.
